Swede
£2.10 (each)
A very modern vegetable, the swede is believed to have originated from a hybrid between the turnip and kohlrabi. It was introduced into England from Holland in 1775 and called ‘turnip-rooted cabbage’. In 1780 we started calling it ‘swede’ when Sweden began to export their crop to us. Its flavour is sweet and nutty, and it is a great addition to winter soups. Peeled and diced, then boiled with vegetables and needs very little cooking before disintegrating. They are rich in vitamin C, calcium and niacin.
